How Key Duplication Actually Works
“Key duplication” sounds like one process, but it’s really four very different jobs depending on your key type. Understanding which category your key falls into tells you what to expect on price, turnaround, and where you can get it done.
1. Mechanical Cutting (Pin Tumbler & Wafer Keys)
The classic process. Your original key is clamped beside a blank, and a guide traces the cuts while a cutting wheel mirrors them onto the blank. Modern shops use computerised key machines that read the cut pattern from a code rather than a physical original — useful when you’ve lost the key but have the cut code.
Applies to: house keys, padlock keys, mailbox keys, older motorcycle keys, mechanical-only car keys.
Time: 5–15 minutes. Walk-in friendly.
2. Transponder Cutting + Chip Programming
Most cars from 1998 onward use a transponder chip embedded in the key head. The car’s immobilizer won’t start the engine unless it reads a paired chip. Duplication is two jobs in one: cut the mechanical blade, then program the chip using a diagnostic tool connected to the car’s OBD port.
Applies to: Proton (post-2005), Perodua (post-2008), most Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Mazda, Hyundai, Kia.
Time: 30–60 minutes. Requires the car to be present.
3. Smart Key / Proximity Fob Pairing
Push-button start cars use rolling-code proximity fobs. Pairing requires a vehicle-specific procedure — sometimes accessible via OBD with the right tool, sometimes locked behind dealer-only software. Premium and recent EV models often fall into the dealer-only category.
Applies to: Push-start cars, most luxury vehicles, EVs, recent SUVs.
Time: 1–3 hours. Some require dealer.
4. RFID / Access Card Cloning
Office, condo, school, and gated community access cards use RFID technology — but not all RFID cards are the same. The card’s frequency determines what reader it works with, how far it can be scanned from, and crucially, whether a locksmith can clone it. The four main types we encounter:
- LF (Low Frequency, 125kHz) — older legacy systems. Simple ID number stored on the chip. Easy to clone with consumer-grade tools. Common in older office buildings, basic gated communities, and budget condos.
- HF (High Frequency, 13.56MHz) — most common today. Includes Mifare Classic (cloneable with the right tool), NFC-compatible cards, and Mifare DESFire (encrypted, generally not cloneable at consumer level). Used in modern condos, offices, schools, and coworking spaces.
- UHF (Ultra High Frequency, 860–960MHz) — long-range cards readable from up to 12 meters. Used for vehicle access at condo gates, office car parks, and toll-style boom gates where the driver doesn’t need to roll down the window. Cloning UHF requires specialised equipment and is typically dealer- or supplier-level work.
- Dual-Frequency (Combined Chip) Cards — one card with two chips inside (commonly UHF + HF). Used by organisations running multiple access systems on the same credential — for example, a condo where the same card opens the pedestrian door (HF) and triggers the boom gate (UHF). These cards must be replaced or supplied as combined-chip blanks; cloning each frequency separately is rarely practical.
Applies to: Condo entry cards, office access fobs, gym membership cards, gated community cards, vehicle access UHF stickers/cards, school student IDs.
Time: 5–15 minutes for single-frequency cloning. Bring your original card.

From RM 8When a Key Cannot Be Duplicated
Not every key can be duplicated by an aftermarket locksmith — and any locksmith who promises otherwise is either lying or about to damage your vehicle. Here’s where the real limits sit.
Restricted & Patented Keyways
High-security key systems like Mul-T-Lock, Abloy Protec, Medeco, and certain Yale Maximum profiles are protected by active patents. The blanks themselves are restricted — locksmiths can only order them through authorized channels with proof of ownership and a signed key authorization card. If you’ve inherited a property with these locks, you’ll typically need to contact the registered keyholder or rekey the entire system.
Encrypted Modern Premium Cars
Several current-generation premium platforms have cryptography that no aftermarket tool can currently bypass:
- Mercedes-Benz from 2014 onward (FBS4 system) — including current C, E, S-Class, GLC, GLE, EQ-series. Authorized dealer only.
- Volvo EX30 and EX90 — use NFC card keys and digital wallet authentication tied to Volvo’s vehicle system. No physical key chip to clone.
- Several newer Chinese EVs — Zeekr, smart, Leapmotor, and some BYD high-trim variants currently lack public aftermarket tool support in Malaysia. We’ll verify feasibility by VIN before quoting.
- Tesla — keys are managed entirely through Tesla’s app and authorized service network.
For these vehicles, going through the authorized dealer is unavoidable. Our locksmiths will tell you upfront if your car falls into this category — we don’t take jobs we can’t complete.
Worn or Damaged Original Keys
If your original key is so worn that the cuts no longer match the original specification, a duplicate made from it will inherit those errors and may not turn smoothly. In this case, the locksmith will decode the lock directly (using a Lishi pick or other decoder) and cut a fresh key to factory specifications instead. This costs slightly more but gives you a key that works better than the worn original.
Lost-Only Smart Keys (No Working Original)
Some smart keys can only be cloned if you have at least one working original. Without any working key, the locksmith must perform an “all-keys-lost” reset, which wipes the vehicle’s memory and programs new keys from scratch. This is a different (and more expensive) procedure than duplication — and on some vehicles it requires specialised tools or dealer access.
Hotel Cards, Office Cards Without Authorization, and Building Access Credentials
Hotel keycards are property of the hotel — replacement is via the front desk only. Office and condo access cards require permission from your employer or building management before duplication is appropriate. We follow strict authorization requirements on all access credentials.
Walk-In, Dispatch, or Mail-In: Which to Choose
Three ways to get a key duplicated in Malaysia. Each has its place.
| Method | Best For | Typical Cost | Time | How to Book |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Walk-in to locksmith shop | Mechanical keys, simple transponders, padlocks, access cards. You have time to travel and bring the original. | Cheapest option | 5–60 min on-site | Find a verified locksmith near you |
| On-site dispatch | Lockouts, all-keys-lost, smart key programming requiring the car. You can’t leave the vehicle or bring it to a shop. | Walk-in price + dispatch fee | 30–120 min on-site after arrival | WhatsApp us for emergency dispatch |
| Mail-in (specialist services) | Premium European bench programming. Used when local capability is limited. | Varies — typically RM 800+ | 3–14 days | Coordinated by specialist locksmith |
Most Malaysian customers should default to walk-in for non-urgent jobs. It’s the cheapest and gives you the best chance of comparing quotes. Use dispatch only when you’re locked out or stranded — that’s where the time pressure justifies the convenience premium. Mail-in is rare and only relevant for specific premium European models where local bench programming capacity is limited.
How to Choose a Trustworthy Locksmith in Malaysia
The Malaysian locksmith market includes some excellent technicians and some opportunists who exploit emergencies. Five things separate the two:
1. Verifiable Industry Affiliation
Look for locksmiths affiliated with Gabungan Persatuan Peniaga Kunci Malaysia (GPPKM / Malaysia Lock Associates / 马来西亚锁业联合总会) — the national trade body for the locksmith industry in Malaysia. Members are vetted, follow a code of conduct, and can be reported through the association if disputes arise. All MyLock-verified locksmiths are GPPKM-affiliated.
2. Registered Business (SSM Number)
A legitimate locksmith operates under a registered business with a Suruhanjaya Syarikat Malaysia (SSM) number. Ask for it before any major job — and refuse anyone who can’t or won’t provide one.
3. Identity on Arrival
For dispatched jobs, the locksmith should display their MyKad (IC) or work ID on arrival. We require all dispatched locksmiths to identify themselves to the customer — both for your safety and theirs.
4. Transparent Pricing Before Work Begins
You should receive a written or WhatsApp-confirmed quote before any cutting, programming, or drilling starts. Common scam patterns we’ve documented in Malaysia include: quoting low on the phone then doubling on arrival, “discovering” extra charges mid-job, refusing to leave unless paid an inflated fee, and damaging the lock to justify a higher replacement charge. None of this is acceptable from a verified locksmith.
Read our state pricing reports for documented examples of locksmith scams in Malaysia and the typical price ranges in your state.
5. No “Ghost” Vans or Roadside Tout Numbers
Many locksmith scams in Malaysia operate via printed flyers stuck on cars, magnets on light poles, or unbranded vans. Legitimate operators have a verifiable business address, online reviews under a consistent name, and a real shopfront or dispatch base. Search the phone number before you call — if Google returns nothing or returns scam reports, walk away.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to duplicate a car key in Malaysia?
Mechanical car keys cost RM 25–60 to duplicate. Transponder keys (with a chip in the head) cost RM 180–450 because they require chip programming on a diagnostic tool. Smart keys with push-button start cost RM 250–1,800 depending on brand and complexity, with premium European cars at the higher end. All-keys-lost replacement (no working original) costs roughly 1.5×–2× the spare key price because the locksmith must reset the vehicle’s memory.
Can any locksmith duplicate a transponder key?
Not every locksmith can. Transponder duplication requires a programming tool (Autel, Xhorse, OBDSTAR, or Lonsdor) and the technical training to use it. Most general locksmiths handle mechanical keys only and outsource transponder work. MyLock-verified locksmiths who service modern cars all have programming capability — we filter the directory by skill so dispatched technicians can actually do the job.
Do I need the original key to make a duplicate?
For mechanical keys, no — a competent locksmith can decode the lock directly and cut a working key without any original. For transponder and smart keys, having one working original makes the job significantly cheaper and faster (it becomes “spare key” work rather than “all-keys-lost” reset). If you’ve genuinely lost all your keys, bring your vehicle’s grant (registration document) and IC — we’ll need to verify ownership before programming new keys.
How long does smart key programming take?
For most Japanese and national brands, a spare smart key takes 30–60 minutes once the locksmith arrives. All-keys-lost on the same vehicles typically takes 1–1.5 hours. Premium European cars (BMW BDC bench programming, Audi MQB component protection) can take 2–4 hours. Recent Toyota TNGA models (post-2022 Vios, Corolla Cross, Vellfire) require specialised bypass cables and run 1.5–2 hours minimum.
Is key duplication legal in Malaysia?
Yes, for keys you legitimately own. Duplicating your own car keys, house keys, padlocks, and remotes is fully legal. Duplicating someone else’s keys without authorization, hotel keycards, restricted patented keys without proof of ownership, and access cards without permission from the property owner is not — and reputable locksmiths refuse these jobs.
Why is dealer key replacement so expensive compared to a locksmith?
Dealers typically follow a “replace the entire module” policy for all-keys-lost scenarios — that means swapping the immobilizer unit, lock cylinders, or full ignition assembly. Independent locksmiths use diagnostic tools to reset the existing electronics and program new keys without replacing hardware. The savings can be substantial: a Mercedes FBS3 key from a dealer can run RM 4,500+ while an independent specialist completes the same job for RM 450–550. A Perodua Axia mechanical lost-key from the dealer can be RM 500+; a locksmith cuts it from the door lock for RM 15–50.
Can a locksmith duplicate the key to my new BYD or Chery?
For most current Chery models (Omoda 5, Omoda E5, Tiggo 7 Pro, Tiggo 8 Pro) and BYD models (Atto 3, Dolphin, Seal), aftermarket programming tools have publicly documented support — independent locksmiths with current Xhorse, Lonsdor, or OBDSTAR equipment can duplicate them. For newer or premium variants where public tool support is still emerging, we verify feasibility before quoting. WhatsApp us with your model and year for a direct answer.
What’s the difference between cloning a key and programming a key?
Cloning copies the existing transponder chip’s data onto a blank chip — fast, simple, and works for older fixed-code chip types. Programming registers a new key directly into the vehicle’s immobilizer memory using a diagnostic tool — required for modern rolling-code and AES-encrypted systems where simple cloning isn’t possible. Most cars from 2015 onward require programming, not cloning.
I lost all my motorcycle keys — can a locksmith help?
For mechanical motorcycles (Honda EX5, Yamaha LC135, Modenas Kriss, SYM Bonus, and similar kapchai models), yes — the locksmith decodes the ignition lock directly and cuts a fresh key. Cost is typically RM 30–80. For motorcycles with immobilizer chips (Yamaha NVX, Honda PCX/ADV newer variants, premium bikes), it’s the same as cars: a programming tool is required, and pricing scales with complexity. Bring your registration and IC.
Can I duplicate my office or condo access card?
Sometimes. EM cards (older 125kHz technology) and standard Mifare Classic cards can usually be cloned by a locksmith with the right tool. Mifare DESFire (encrypted) and HID iClass cards typically cannot be cloned at consumer level — those require reissuance through your building management or employer. We require either evidence of authorization or that you’re cloning your own card. Hotel keycards are not cloneable as a service — they’re property of the hotel.
