What “all key lost” actually means

“All key lost” — or AKL — is the locksmith trade term for the situation where you have no working key to your vehicle at all. No spare in a drawer at home, no master with a family member, nothing. In Malaysia, customers usually search for this as kunci kereta hilang semua, spare key tak ada, or simply “lost all car keys.”

AKL is fundamentally different from making a spare key. With spare-key duplication, the technician has an existing working key to clone from — chip data, mechanical cut pattern, programming codes, all readable from the original. With AKL, there is no original to copy. The technician has to create vehicle access, cut a new mechanical blade, program a fresh transponder from scratch, and pair the new key with your car’s immobilizer — all without an existing working key as reference. That is why AKL takes longer, requires more specialised tools, and is not something every locksmith can do for every car.

Dealer vs verified independent locksmith — which fits your case

The single most common AKL question in Malaysian online forums is whether to take the car to the authorised service centre or call an automotive locksmith. The honest answer depends on a few factors — neither route is universally better.

A practical decision rule: Choose the dealer if your vehicle is under manufacturer warranty AND the model uses an encrypted system that only the dealer tool reaches, or if you have time and prefer the authorised route on principle. Choose a verified independent locksmith if you need recovery in hours not days, your car is stranded somewhere a tow truck cannot easily reach (multi-storey basement, tight commercial parking), or your vehicle is out of warranty and the cost-time trade-off favours speed.

What AKL recovery looks like for Malaysian cars

Malaysia’s vehicle parc is heavily dominated by Perodua, Proton, Honda, and Toyota. Each marque has its own immobilizer generations, chip families, and tool requirements — and within each marque, pre-2015 legacy models behave very differently from post-2018 smart-key generations. Same model name does not always mean same key system: Malaysian CKD variants, recon imports, Daihatsu-derived Perodua systems, and Geely-based Proton models can carry different chip families than global model charts suggest. Insurance, warranty, and the documentation you need

Insurance and your NCD

If you claim under your own motor insurance policy for AKL recovery, your No Claim Discount may be affected unless your policy or an add-on protects it. Malaysian insurers including MSIG offer Smart Key Shield and NCD-relief options, and Etiqa offers a Smart Key Replacement Cover as an optional benefit — check your specific policy before assuming a claim is the best route. For many drivers, paying a verified locksmith directly costs less than losing years of accumulated NCD bonuses.

Manufacturer warranty

Using an independent locksmith does not automatically void your vehicle’s manufacturer warranty. However, if the work damages a covered component or conflicts with the manufacturer’s security procedures, a warranty dispute may arise. For cars still under warranty, check with your service centre first. Malaysian Competition Commission has previously scrutinised restrictions requiring consumers to use only authorised service centres for warranty preservation.

Documentation to bring

AKL is the highest fraud-risk locksmith service — somebody creating a working key to a vehicle they may not own. Verified technicians will check. Have these ready on arrival:

• The vehicle grant (geran)
• Authorisation letter if you are not the registered owner

The strongest proof is the MyJPJ app. Only the registered owner can pull live vehicle ownership records through the official MyJPJ app on their own phone, and showing that screen in person to the technician is the cleanest verification path. Static screenshots are no longer trusted on their own — AI-edited screenshots have become easy to produce in 2026, so verified technicians prefer to see the live MyJPJ app screen when you meet up. If you must send a screenshot in advance on WhatsApp to confirm feasibility before dispatch, expect the technician to verify the same record live on your phone on arrival.

Without proper documentation a verified technician will not proceed — and that protection works in your favour, not against you.

Verified technicians check IC and vehicle grant on arrival, with live verification through the MyJPJ app as the strongest preferred path (only the registered owner can pull live ownership records on their own phone, and AI-edited screenshots have become easy enough to produce that static images alone are no longer trusted). For drivers who are not the registered owner, an authorisation letter is required. This is not optional — it is the structural safeguard that lets verified locksmiths work in this category at all.

If a technician becomes unavailable after dispatch

If the assigned technician’s situation changes after dispatch — vehicle breakdown, prior job overrun, location-unreachable — MyLock.my may attempt to contact another eligible AKL technician in the verified roster and will update you on WhatsApp. Availability is not guaranteed, especially late at night or outside core coverage areas; we update you transparently rather than leave you waiting silently on a single technician.
