Digital lock for a grill door

The three outcomes, plainly

Nobody publishes this because the answer is not a clean yes. It is the question Malaysian buyers actually ask, so here it is.

• Usually works

  Digital lock on the main door, mechanical on the grill

  The most common setup we fit, and the one we recommend by default. You get fingerprint and PIN entry where it matters, on a door leaf that is designed to hold the lock, out of the weather. The grill keeps a solid mechanical lock as the outer layer.

• Sometimes works

  Narrow-body digital lock on the grill stile

  Possible when the gate’s locking stile is a flat tube wide enough to take a narrow-body lock and the frame is rigid enough not to flex. This needs measuring — it is decided by your gate, not by the model. It also puts electronics outdoors; see the exposure warning below.

• We will say no

  Round-bar, decorative or heavily flexing grills

  If the stile is round bar, too narrow, or the gate racks when you pull it, a digital lock will misalign and fail — often within months. We would rather lose the sale than fit something we know will jam. We will tell you this on the photo check, free.

“But then the grill has to use a normal lock?”

This is the exact question we get asked most, so let us answer it properly. Two doors means two locks with two different jobs — that is not a compromise, it is how layered security is supposed to work.

  The grill’s job is to be visibly hard to get through and to survive weather. A good mechanical lock does that better, cheaper, and for longer than electronics bolted to an outdoor frame.

  Convenience and control

  The digital lock goes here — sheltered, on a proper door leaf. This is where keyless entry actually earns its money: no keys for the kids, temporary PINs for a helper or contractor, and a record of who came in.

  • Out of the sun and rain
  • Mounted in a leaf built to hold it

Four measurements decide it

If you want to know before you contact anyone, measure these. Or send us a photo with a tape measure in frame and we will read them off for you.

  Locking stile width The flat face of the vertical tube where the lock would sit. Under ~40 mm and most digital bodies will not fit.

  Stile depth How deep that tube is front to back. This decides whether any lock case can pass through it at all.

• 3

  Flex / racking Pull the gate at the handle end. If it moves more than a few millimetres, an electronic bolt will bind.

  Shelter Does rain hit the lock position directly? If yes, mechanical on the grill is the right call.

Which of our locks are even candidates

Straight from the spec sheets. We would rather show you the short list than imply everything fits everything.

Being straight about a gap: none of these five is a purpose-built rim lock for a metal gate. The two aluminium narrow-stile models are the closest form factor and we are confirming exact stile limits with the manufacturer. Until that is in writing we will not publish a compatibility promise — we will measure your gate and tell you.

  Do I need two sets of digital lock, one at the grill and one at the wooden door?

  You can, but we rarely recommend it. Two digital locks means two sets of batteries, two things to fail, and one of them sitting in the weather. The setup that works long-term is one digital lock on the sheltered main door and a solid mechanical lock on the grill.

• Can grill put digital lock or not?

  Sometimes. It depends on the width and depth of the vertical tube where the lock would go, and on whether the gate flexes. Four measurements decide it — or send a photo and we will check for you.

• If I install digital lock on the main door, do I still need the grill?

  That is your call, and it is a security question rather than a lock question. The grill is your outer physical barrier; a digital lock does not replace it. Most of our customers keep the grill and stop bothering to lock it every time — which is a real convenience gain, but understand you have then given up that layer.

• My condo door is fire rated and double leaf. Can I still fit a digital lock?

  Not our Smartverse models on the fire door itself. SVDLME001BK is graded 0 for fire under BS EN 14846, which means fire performance was not declared — so fitting it to a fire or smoke door can compromise the door’s certification and, in a managed building, breach your fire strategy. Ask your management for the door schedule first. We will not fit one to a fire door.

• How to unlock if the battery finish?

  Every Smartverse lock we supply has a mechanical emergency key, and the M Series also takes emergency power over USB-C from a normal power bank to get you in. The lock warns you well before the batteries die. Keep the emergency key somewhere that is not inside the house.

• What if I go overseas for two months and the battery runs out?

  Change the batteries before you travel and it is a non-issue — the M Series runs on 4×AA. If you are already locked out, the USB-C emergency power point on the outside panel will power the lock long enough to open it, and the mechanical key always works.

• How much including installation?

  We quote supplied-and-fitted, in writing, before we start — because that is the number you actually care about. It depends on the model and what your door needs, so the photo check comes first. No deposit to get a quote.

• Can your installer do it, or is this his first time?

  Fair question, and one we see asked on forums a lot. Every technician on the MyLock network is verified before they take jobs, and grill and security-door work is exactly what Malaysian locksmiths do all day. If a job needs a skill set we are not confident about, we say so rather than send someone to learn on your door.

  有时可以。一般智能门锁需要 35–55 mm 的实心门扇来容纳锁体，而铁门是中空方管焊接的框架， 没有实心门扇，而且长期日晒雨淋。我们最常做、也最耐用的方案是： 智能锁装在里面的大门，铁门继续使用坚固的机械锁。
