Short answer: choose an Anti-Rust (AR) padlock if it will live outdoors in Malaysia’s rain, humidity or coastal salt air — its SUS304 stainless shackle resists the rust that seizes ordinary padlocks. Choose a Heavy-Duty (HD) padlock if maximum cut resistance is the priority — its hardened alloy-steel shackle better resists bolt cutters. In the Vpass range the two flagships are the VS 40 AR (stainless, anti-rust) and the VS 50 HD (hardened, heavy-duty). Both are rekeyable, carry a 5-year warranty, and are made in Malaysia.

When should you choose Anti-Rust (AR)?
Choose the Anti-Rust VS 40 AR when the padlock is exposed to weather: outdoor gates and grilles, meter and pump cabinets, boat and jetty fittings, or anything within reach of coastal salt air. Its 8 mm shackle is SUS304 stainless steel, so it resists the surface rust and seizing that make ordinary padlocks jam after a few monsoon seasons. The trade-off is that stainless steel is chosen for corrosion resistance rather than raw hardness, so cut resistance is good but not the category maximum.
When should you choose Heavy-Duty (HD)?
Choose the Heavy-Duty VS 50 HD when resistance to bolt cutters and cutting tools is the priority — storerooms, warehouses, chains, sheds and general high-security hasps, especially under cover. Its 10 mm hardened alloy-steel shackle favours cut resistance, and the 50 mm brass body with nickel-chrome finish is weather-resistant for typical outdoor use, though it is not stainless like the AR.
Rust resistance or cut resistance — can I have both?
No single shackle metal maximises both at once: stainless steel wins on rust, hardened alloy steel wins on cutting. Pick by your biggest risk. If the lock is outdoors and constantly wet (coastal, unsheltered), choose Anti-Rust — a rusted-solid lock you can’t open is a bigger day-to-day problem than a marginal difference in cut resistance. If the lock is sheltered but a target for tools, choose Heavy-Duty. For roller shutters and sliding gates specifically, a monoblock VAT 50 HD (no exposed shackle, stainless bolt) sidesteps the choice.
What about size?
The Anti-Rust series is made in 40 and 50 mm; the Heavy-Duty series is made in 40, 50, 55 and 60 mm (the 40 mm HD is available on request). Larger bodies carry thicker shackles for higher security but need more room on the hasp. Every size offers a Normal or Long shackle for extra vertical clearance. Key systems (both models)
Both the AR and HD can be ordered Single (each its own key), Keyed-Alike (one key opens the whole set, no premium) or Master-Keyed (each its own key plus a master). All are rekeyable, so a locksmith can change the key without replacing the lock.
Frequently asked questions
Is an anti-rust padlock weaker than a heavy-duty one?
Not weak — different. The AR’s SUS304 stainless shackle prioritises rust resistance and still offers good cut resistance; the HD’s hardened alloy shackle prioritises cut resistance. Choose by whether rust or cutting is your bigger risk.
Which is better for an outdoor gate in Malaysia?
The Anti-Rust VS 40 AR, because outdoor gates face rain, humidity and (near the coast) salt air that rust ordinary shackles. Step up to 50 mm if the hasp is large.
Which resists bolt cutters best?
The Heavy-Duty VS 50 HD, thanks to its 10 mm hardened alloy-steel shackle. For a shackle that can’t be cut at all, use the monoblock VAT 50 HD.
Do both come with the same warranty?
Yes — both carry a 5-year mechanical warranty rated to 200,000+ cycles, supported by MyLock.my’s locksmith network.
